Geelani said instead of understanding the wishes and aspirations of people of Kashmir India had always tried Kashmir through the barrel of gun.”

“Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru is on record to have said that ‘he is not in favour of a forcible marriage’ and hence Kashmiris should be given the right to decide their future,” Geelani, according to a statement issued by the Hurriyat faction, told Paswan.

“However, these commitments were never fulfilled and the current situation is because of the policy applied by India vis-à-vis Kashmir,” he said.“Our struggle is based on justice and truth. But India is trying to use all means to suppress and trying to give it a violent colour,”

Ten days to marriage, Kupwara man faces police pestering

Srinagar sept 21:

A would-be groom who participated in pro-Islam and anti-US protests last week is haunted by police in Kupwara district of North Kashmir.

23-year-old Ejaz Ahmad, son of late Khazir Mohammad Hajam of Hajjam Mohalla locality of Muqami-Shah Wali (RA) in the frontier district who is scheduled to tie the nuptial knot on October 2-3, has been evading arrest for nearly ten days. His crime? He participated in a pro-Islam and anti-US demonstration last week to protest the alleged desecration of the holy Quran in the United States of America.

“I’m tired now. My feet are badly hurt, my body is aching. I can’t run anymore,” says Ejaz.

“I have been starving from last ten days. I stay in orchards and paddy fields throughout the day and at night I stay with some confidant friends and distant relatives. They (police) have made me a fugitive,” he adds.

Unfolding the events, Ejaz said that men, women and children of Muqami-Shah-Wali (RA) and its adjoining villages converged near Drugmulla on the Kupwara-Sringar highway and staged peaceful pro-Islam and anti-US demonstrations. The demonstration, he said ended peacefully after an hour.

“Soon after the sunset, contingent of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) men and police carried out raids in the village and rounded up many youth. Luckily, I and my brothers managed to escape. Since then, forces have carried out at least four nocturnal raids at my house,” says Ejaz.

“I peacefully protested against the Quran desecration, is that my sin?” he asked.

Perturbed by the nocturnal raids by police, Ejaz said that he was deeply worried about the safety of her ailing mother.

“I was dreaming of happy married life little knowing that police will turn it into a nightmare,” the distraught youth says.

Not the soon-to-be groom and his siblings are uncertain over the marriage, but their worry is shared by their mother as well.

“A police officer assured me that my son’s wedding procession to the bride’s house will be taken out from the police station, if he surrenders,” Ejaz’s mother Fatima begum says.

“I don’t trust them. I don’t want any trouble in the wedding .We have decided to postpone the marriage.” she adds.

Pertinently, a former Army man and a septuagenarian were among eight people detained by police following massive protests against the alleged Quran desecration.

“We have arrested more than 20 people in the recent days. The youth may also be involved in unlawful activities and that’s the reason police raided his house,” Station House Officer (SHO) Kupwara, Musadiq Abbas told reporters

Meanwhile, at least half a dozen people were arrested in fresh round of raids by police in several areas since last night.

Some of the arrested have been identified as Ghulam Mohi-ud-din, son of Abdul Khaliq Peer, Nazir Ahmad and Manzoor Ahmad, sons of Abdul Subhan Najar , Bilal Ahmad, son of Ghulam Mohammad Najar and Farooq Ahmad, son of Ghulam Ahmad Mir. Farooq is said to be a government employee. A case Fir No 124/2010 under section 148, 149, 136, 153, 151 RPC has been registered against them.

APD calls on separatists in quest of peace

In what has been regarded as major step by centre, a small five-member group of headed by Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Sitaram Yechury and Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen's Asaduddin Owaisi, met Geelani at his residence in Hyderpora of the city here this afternoon.

(SAD) and Namanageshwara Rao of the Telegu Desam Party (TDP) were also
present in the meeting with the separatist leader who is known to bespearheading the current wave of street protests in the Kashmir Valley. Aired live by most of the television channels, Geelani questioned the legitimacy of India over Kashmir in historical prospective.“You need to aware people of India as well as political leadership and
discuss the question of Jammu and Kashmir as a dispute. We are not seeking something that is an integral part of India but an internationally acclaimed dispute,” he said when Yechury pleaded for restoration of normalcy with the separatist leader who has been one of the key players in the three-month long agitation by issuing periodic calendars of protests. To support his claim, Geelani said since 1947, over 150 dialogues hadtaken place on the vexed issue without yielding any result. “There are certain internationally acclaimed UN resolutions on Kashmir and thesolution has lies in it.”One of the delegates, Asaduddin Owaisi said that whole nation was
concerned about the “killing of innocents” in the Valley and even made

The formation of Kashmir Committees, he said, will ensure that all
major political forces are on board the peace process and “it willhelp institutionalize and sustain the process to resolve the Kashmir problem and make the process immune from domestic politics and
tendencies to act as spoilers.”

Peace hold for a day on APD visit in Kashmir

Srinagar, Sept 20:

While the 39-member All Party Delegation led by Home Minister P. Chidambaram was in the town, the strife torn Kashmir Valley remained “largely peaceful” amid ‘strict’ curfew on ninth running day on Monday. Except for clashes in Sopore town in North Kashmir where five personswere injured, there were no reports of any other major clashes from anywhere from the Valley hitherto filing this report late in the evening. Round-the-clock Curfew continued as there was no relaxation in Srinagar and all other areas across the length and breadth of the Valley which off late has been engulfed in what has been described as “vicious cycle of violence”. The ongoing unrest that began June 11has so far claimed over a hundred lives in the Valley. One could gauge the strictness of the curfew in the valley from the fact that except for a few cars that carried curfew-bearing passengers and stray dogs that engaged in vicious fights, the city wore the appearance of a ghost town as security personnel dotted its roads and streets. As per a police spokesperson, curfew continued to be in force ‘strictly’ in 31 towns across the Valley on Monday and that the day passed off peacefully. As per the police, Besides strict curfew restrictions continued in this summer capital, Budgam district town along with Warpora, Mirgund, Nadirgund, Choon, Humhama, Wattdara, Gagoo, Ompora, Narkara, Shiekhpora, Galwanpora, Chadoora, Panzan, Nagam, Machawa, Kralpora, Wathora, Dawlatpora, Hassipora, Alamdar Colony, and Charar-i-Shrief,Ganderbal district town and nearby Kangan in the central Kashmir. Anantnag district town along with Mattan and Bijbehara, Kulgam district town and Qoimoh, Pulwama district town, Tral, Awantipora, Lethpora, Pampore and Kakapora, Shopian district town, Baramulla district town and Delina, Kunzer, Tangmarg, Pattan, Singhpora, Sopore, Ladoora and Rafiabad, Kupwara district town, Kralpora, Trehgam, Handwara, Chotipora and Kulangam, Bandipora district town and Sumbal in Bandipora district in southern and northern Kashmir were also under strict curfew, the spokesperson said. “The day as well as the preceding night passed off peacefully in thewhole Kashmir valley,” the spokesperson said. However, police said that five persons were injured after police and
security forces chased away a mob which resorted to stone-pelting at Nathipora Bomai in northern Sopore.
Official sources said that the police and security forces resorted to firing on the mob who refused to relent despite baton charge and bursting of teargas smoke shells. Two of the injured persons identified as Junaid Ahmad (13) and Rameez Ahmad Bhat (22) were serious injured after hit on back and were rushed to SMHS hospital here, some 55 kilometers from the spot of occurrence. The doctors who operated upon the duo termed their condition as critical, the official sources added. As per locals, people staged protest against the killing of a gril, Mubeena Akhtar, who was hit by a stray bullet near the entrance of her house last evening while security forces were chasing a mob. There were reports of minor clashes Lal Bazar in old city, Khannabal and Sagam in Anantnag and Muran in Pulwama districts of South Kashmir, the officials added. Besides, minor clashes between security forces and stone pelting mob were also received from north Kashmir’sRafiababd area.

Kashmir 19 sept 2010

Srinagar, Sep 19: ..................Rejecting the All Party delegation’s visit to Kashmir as another “dilly dallying and futile” exercise on part of the Indian Government, Chairman Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani said his conglomerate 'won’t participate in any dialouge with the delegation'.
Claiming that the government had hatched a “conspiracy” to foil the peaceful protests outside army and other military installations on Tuesday, September 21, Syed Ali Shah Geelani Saturday modified his earlier call asking people to instead stage protest demonstrations in district and tehseel headquarters across the Valley on the day. Geelani claimed that the decision was taken after his led Hurriyat faction received reliable information about a government conspiracy to infiltrate unscrupulous elements in the peaceful protest demonstrations outside the military installations so as to facilitate widespread civilian killings on the day. All this, he claimed, is being done to brand the “peaceful struggle of Kashmiris for their right to self determination as a violent one.” “Therefore, we have modified our programme. People should now gather at every district and tehseel headquarters and stage register their protest peacefully against the India,” Geelani said, adding that as open letters would also be sent to the higher ups of Indian military through press and internet on the day. He also asked people to peacefully hold ‘Go India Go’ placards across the Valley to “convey their true aspirations to the visiting Indian delegation when they visit Kashmir on Monday, September 20. He said “Indian agencies” were also luring some government officers and other Kashmiris to be part of gathering for welcoming the delegation. “These people should ask their conscience if it they will be not betraying the blood of more than hundred people martyred by people over the past few months. They should refrain from such endeavours lest they face a social boycott.” Geelani said at a time when India was showing its arrogance of power by unleashing an unparalleled reign of terror in Kashmir, "we should not surrender before the military might of India and continue with struggle." He said the reason for failure of 150 rounds of talks between Kashmiris and New Delhi during thet last six decades remains to be the “stubborn” and “unrealistic” attitude of India towards the Kashmir dispute. “Since 27 October, 1947, India has occupied Kashmir through its military. On one hand it talks of dialogue while in the same breath it claims Kashmir to be its integral part,” he said. Geelani reiterated that until India didn’t accept Kashmir as an international dispute and agreed to withdraw its troops and resolve the Kashmir issue in its historical context participation in any sort of dialogue with India will be a “ futile and meaningless exercise.”

Army counter Geelani; appeal not to follow Hurriyat’s call

Srinager September 16,

The army today asked people not to pay heed to the call given by
Hurriyat Conference (G) leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani to march towards
the security forces' camps in the Valley on September 21 to press for
demilitarisation of the state.

The Hurriyat Conference has been issuing regular protest calendars
which have already caused untold hardship to the peace loving people
of J&K. In their latest protest calendar, the Hurriyat has declared
ten days of strikes with only two days of respite. On 21 Sep 10, the
Hurriyat has asked people to step up violence by staging sit-in
protests outside Army camps and preventing move of Army convoys. This
is a deliberate attempt to embroil the Army in the ongoing agitation
and distract it from its primary role, defence spokesman Lt Colonel JS
Brar said in statement.
"The army makes a sincere appeal to people to avoid being misled by
the Hurriyat leaders and avoid confronting army garrisons or
vehicles," Brar said.
The spokesman even asked the Hurriyat Conference to withdraw its
protest programme in order to prevent loss of life or property.
The army appeal comes a day after top security and civil officials
met here to devise a strategy to tackle the separatist programme for
September 21.
A special core group meeting was chaired by security adviser to the
chief minister Lt Gen NC Marwah, where measures were discussed to
effectively counter the protest calendar issued by the Hurriyat. A
detailed joint strategy was formulated to restore normalcy in Kashmir.
Although the spokesperson did not elaborate, highly placed sources
said as part of the strategy, the security forces will reduce movement
to avoid confrontation with protesters.
The meeting was held in response to the call given by Geelani to
people to march towards the security forces' camps on September 21 to
press for demilitarisation of the state.
Asserting that army has been at the forefront of rescue and relief
missions during natural calamities, Lt Colonel Brar said "army will
continue to work for the safety, welfare and empowerment of the
people".
"The Hurriyat is indeed misleading the ordinary masses and trying to
create a wedge between army and the people for its vested interests.
People should avoid falling into the trap laid by Hurriyat leaders,"
he said.
The spokesman said the Hurriyat programme of protesting outside army
camps was a deliberate attempt to embroil the army in the ongoing
agitation and distract it from its primary role of guarding the
borders and countering insurgency.
The Hurriyat is indeed misleading the ordinary masses and trying to
create a wedge between the Army and the people for its vested
interests. Apparently, the aim is to portray that the Army is not with
them, and for their welfare. The Army appeals to the people of Kashmir
to avoid falling into the trap being laid by Hurriyat leaders, Brar
said in statement

Meanwhile, Geelani told reporters at his residence that his programme
is peaceful and there is no plan to attack the security forces camps.
"We only want to tell the forces that they will have to leave this
land one day. The elders of the respective areas will lead the marches
and hand over memoranda to the army personnel in this regard," he
added.
Hurriyat Conference chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani has rejected any
talks with the Centre on the Kashmir issue and said grant of right to
self-determination was the only way to resolve the problem..Later, the
separatist leader was put under house arrest,.
Racting on the issue Spokesman of Hurriyat G Ayaz Akber said people
have been asked to submit memorandum to nearby Army camps, urging them
to leave the valley. However, it clear that only two to three people
will hand over the memorandum to Army personnel.

According to sources Omar Abdullah-led government has reportedly
decided to use the Army proactively to prevent Syed Ali Shah Geelani
from going ahead with his plan of organising mass demonstrations and
shutdowns across the Kashmir Valley on September 21.
Sources said senior officials from the Army, CRPF, BSF, including GOCs
of the Kilo Force and the Victor Force, participated in the meeting.

"The meeting discussed the measures to effectively counter the protest
calendar issued by the Hurriyat and formulated a detailed joint
strategy to restore normalcy in Kashmir. The strategy will be
implemented with immediate effect", said a press release from Press
Information Bureau (Defence Wing) late Wednesday night.

Flights remains suspended, to resume Friday

Srinagar: As the situation on the ground remained too untenable to transfer passengers from under-renovation Srinagar airport to Awantipora, the aerial traffic remained suspended for third day in curfew bound Kashmir on Wednesday.

Official sources said that all the flights to and fro the summer capital of the sate would remain suspended till September 17 as the authorities hope to finish upgradation and repairs at the Valley’s international airport by the date.

It’s for the first time in last 11-years that the air traffic was suspended in Srinagar. Earlier it happened in 1999 during the Kargil War.

Director, Srinagar Airport, VK Gupta said that the repair works on the runway in Srinagar would take day or two more against the scheduled completion on September 15.

“The repair works are still unfinished and it may take day or two more against the scheduled,” he said

On suspension of the services, V K Gupta said that administration had expressed inability to ferry the passenger from Srinagar to Awantipora, leading to the decision.

An official spokesman, meanwhile said: “the upgradation of Srinagar International Airport is nearing completion and all the air services will resume from Srinagar airport with effect from September 17, day after tomorrow.”

On September 03, the civilian air traffic was diverted to Indian Air Force’s airport at Awantipora in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district following the upgradation.

Most of the other airlines flying to Srinagar had already cut their operations till repairs were done at the Srinagar runways.

The international airport was tipped to be closed for 15 days with no flights from Awantipora. However, the state government pleaded with Ministry of Defence, which maintains the airport, to make available the flights from Awantipora especially for Eid festival.

The repair works were earlier scheduled to be done in June this year but it was postponed after state government pleaded the Centre that closure of airport would affect the tourist season. However, in wake of the unrest, bringing the tourist inflow to near zero, the defence authorities decided to carry the repairs from September 03. The authorities entrusted with the maintenance of the runway had set September 15 as the cut of date for the completion of the repair works.

The decision has left hundreds of people disappointed here especially those who had to return home yesterday.

Despite being allowed amid tightest curfew on Sunday last, hundreds of passengers had to return homes as all airlines ad cancelled Srinagar-bound flights.

APM fails to strike chord in Kashmir

Srinagar, Sep 15: The much talked about All Party Meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over Kashmir failed to strike chord among separatists in the valley.

Chairman of his faction of Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Geelani said there were “no expectations” from the meeting since onset. “Indian is discussing things that hardly matter in Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.

The veteran said that instead of a positive response to the five conditions put forward by him, New Delhi was speaking ‘military language’ in the valley. “Kashmir has been turned into a jail,” he said.

Regarding a meeting with the All Party delegation, Geelani said decision if warranted would be taking after consultation with the other party members. “For a dialogue with New Delhi, it is necessary that they should first show a positive response to our demands,” he added.

The chairman of the parallel Hurriyat Conference faction, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said that the whole exercise was futile. “One thing has been proved that India has no policy regarding Kashmir,” Mirwaiz said.

He said that the Indian parties have failed to capture an opportunity “to come with a strong policy on Kashmir”.

Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front chairman, Mohammad Yasin Malik too termed the meeting as “disappointing.”

On meeting the incoming delegates, he said, “If such an offer comes it will be subsequently taken into consideration. Right now it will be pre-mature to comment over it,” he said.

Force given license to kill innocents: Mirwaiz

Srinagar: Strongly condemning the “unprovoked” police firing in Mendhar Poonch, Chairman Hurriyat Conference (M), Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Wednesday said the government had given the police and the troops a license to kill innocent civilians.

“The use of indiscriminate force on peaceful protesters in Mendhar that left five people dead and scores critically injured is yet another instance of the government seeking revenge upon a people, determined to achieve their freedom, by spilling their blood. This should be an eye-opener for all the civilized nations of the word,” Mirwaiz said in a statement issued here.

Mirwaiz while condemning the imposition of curfew in Kashmir and Muslim majority Poonch district in Jammu termed the restrictions on people which he said had led to an acute shortage of essential commodities as the worst kind of human rights violation.

Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir liberation Front chief, Mohammad Yasin Malik while condemning the Mendhar killings has said that so called rulers have given a free hand to forces for killings. “They have failed to curb the freedom struggle through force and are now resorting to tactics that would even put Hitler to shame,” Malik said, while referring to the civilian killings in Kashmir and Poonch and the imposition of strict curfew in the two regions. Malik said the ransacking of residential houses, arrests of youth, denying the people food supplies and medicines by imposing severe curbs and restrictions had put a severe question mark over India claiming to be the world’s largest democracy. He also condemned the “undemocratic” curbs imposed on the media in Kashmir and urged the Indian civil society, human rights groups and international community to take a strong notice of the worsening human rights violation in Kashmir.
