8 labourers amon 12 killed in accidents


Srinagar, Sept 22: Eight non-local labourers were among twelve persons killed in separate mishaps in Kashmir Valley, official sources said Wednesday.

They said nine persons were killed when a Sumo vehicle they were traveling skidded off the road and rolled down into nearly 400ft gorge on Srinagar-Leh highway near Gatribal Kangan in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district last evening.

Nine persons including driver of the vehicle (JK10-1700) and eight Nepali labourers were killed on the spot while one passenger, Ranju Bati had a miraculous escape and has been admitted to hospital for treatment.

Except for driver of the vehicle, identity of the slain is being ascertained, the official added.

The process to handover the body of the driver, Ahmad Ali son of Abdul Aziz, to his family living in Channi Gund, Kargil, has been initiated, the officials added.

In more persons were killed in another mishap on the highway when tipper they were traveling in met with accident near Ranga mode in Sonamarg area.

They said that the ill fated Tipper (JK03A 2634) was on its way to Srinagar when its driver lost control of the vehicle and rolled into a nearby nalla. The slain include driver Ghulam Hassan Mir son of Ghulam Mohammad Mir of Chadoora and conductor, Ghulam Hassan Ganai son of Mohammad Bakir of Chattergam Chadoora in central Budgam district

In another mishap, a vehicle—Quails (JK01G-7437) hit and seriously injured a pedestrian Tanveer Ahmad Dar (17) son of Mohammad Sultan near Chandiloora Tangmarg in northern Kashmir’s Baramulla district last evening.

They said Dar was shifted to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

2 militants killed in Kupwara, Sopore


Srinagar, Sept 22: Two militants were killed in separate gunfights in north Kashmir’s Sopore and Kupwara district, official sources said.

They said an unidentified militant was killed in an ongoing gun battle with militants in frontier Kupwara district.

They said that troops of 22 and 6 Rashtriya Rifles launched a cordon-and-searches following inputs about the presence militants in Dardhaji Zachaldara-Handwara in the frontier district. As the search party was advancing towards the target area, militants hiding in the woods opened fire, which was retaliated. In the ensuing gunfight, one militant has been killed, they said. The searches in the area were continuing when reports last came in, they added. “The dead body has been recovered and later handed over to Police Post Zachaldara,” they added.

Meanwhile, Police and Army killed a militant in Doru area of Sopore town in Baramulla district.

SP Sopore,Altaf Ahmad Khan said that based on specific information, police and 22RR launched a joint operation at Dooru-Sopore. The operation led to an encounter. “So far one militant has been killed in the on going encounter. Further details are being collected,” the SP said.
