Omar Abdullah government has already announced a CBI probe into the scam, the lid of which was blown off on August 21 when invigilators got suspicious about some candidates appearing in the MBBS/BDS entrance test of the Acharya Sri Chander College of Medical Sciences in Jammu, as their signatures did not match those on the original forms.

As per police, the impersonators were hired from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh and brought to Jammu by Kunj Bihari, the kingpin who remains untraced. The detained are present in police remand.

PDP accuses Omar of Corruption

Srinagar August 25:

Accusing Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of gross corruption and misuse of office, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Wednesday alleged that junior Abdullah has received Rs 500 crore as kickback for allotting the Rattle Power project to a particular party. .

In a scathing attack on the Abdullah-led government, the PDP alleged that the only project that has been completed in the state during the 20 months of Abdullah’s tenure is the “palace being constructed for him at Gupkar road at a cost of 20 crore rupees.”

“While every other work in Kashmir is on standstill for the last three months construction of the Abdullah palace has been going on nonstop with the workers from outside the state lodged in the state guest house at state expanses. There are reports of certain priceless antiques having been pilfered from the state Tosh Khana to install them in the chief minister’s residence and his family wardrobe,” Nizamuddin Bhat, senior PDP leader and member legislative assembly from Bandipore told media persons here.

Bhat said the only thing Abdullah was considered about at a time when people are being slaughtered is his palace.

Referring to Dr. Fayaz Ahmad Shawl, Bhat said the noted cardiologist “recently publicly accused the chief minister and his close aide and minister of having demanded 3 crore rupees for a permission to open up a hospital.”

The government, he said, has put on sale the whole of the state.

“According to our information the entire amount of 26 crores available under the secret fund of the Chief Minister has been withdrawn recently,” Bhat added.

Bhat said while the chief minister was reported in local press to have ordered a vigilance inquiry into the alleged corrupt practices of four of his senior ministers and inquiry was supposed to have been completed in ten days; nothing has been heard about it.

“The larger tragedy of present day Kashmir apart, which is defined by atrocities, repression, collapse of political and administrative system, grave economic crisis, starvation prospect of large sections of society these instances of corruption should have been sufficient for any government to feel ashamed and face public trial. But this government has systematically demolished the institutions like the Accountability Commission and the Information Commission. We are therefore taking these issues to the public for their scrutiny,” he added.

Bhat said even though the situation in Kashmir is currently too grim to afford any distraction from the agony and trauma of an entire population which is under siege while parents are mourning their children, government repression is touching new levels and the discredited, irrelevant and illegitimate government is only making things worse, the PDP “desisted from raising issues that could tend to trivialize the tragedy and undermine a genuine sentiment that is being flagged by our youth at the cost of their lives.(curtsy PBI)

Mirwaiz castigates Govt for arbitrary arrests

Srinagar August 24:

Expressing serious concern over the future of Kashmir’s young generation, Chairman Hurriyat Conference (M), Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Tuesday castigated the government for the arbitrary arrest of youth across the Valley and subjecting them to mental and physical torture.

“On one hand the troops and police are continuing with the government sponsored genocide in Kashmir by killing innocent boys as young as eight while young kids and boys are being subjected to the worst kind of torture in custody under a conspiracy against the future of youth,” Mirwaiz said in a statement issued here.

Condemning the harassment of people in the recent phase of ‘crackdowns’ by troops and police during the holy month of Ramadan, Mirwaiz said despite being aware of its repercussions on the Kashmiri society the government is reviving the “renegade and Ikhwani culture” of the ‘90s. Mirwaiz said harassing people by subjecting them to identification parades during crackdowns in this holy month is a part of the same strategy. “The revival of reengadge culture by government is aimed at undermining the freedom movement by creating internal anarchy and civil war like situation,” Mirwaiz said.

Mirwaiz also appealed the civil society and media to play a positive role in countering the “ ongoing oppression”.

Earlier, Mirwaiz during an interaction with Sikh delegations reiterated that the Sikh community was the trust of the Muslims and assured full protection to the community...............( Curtsy ..PBI)

Kashmir a political issue not law and order problem: Karat

Demands no firing policy against protesters

Srinagar: Calling for strict “no firing policy” to end “brutal killings”, CPI (M) Monday asked New Delhi to look at Kashmir as “political issue” rather than “a law and order problem.”

“The Central Government should stop treating Kashmir as a law and order problem which can be resolved through administrative measures,” CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat told reporters here.

“Kashmir is a political issue and avoiding it will not resolve it. We urge the Centre to initiate political a sustained political dialogue with all sections in the Jammu and Kashmir to eventually reach a political settlement,” Karat added.

He termed as ‘unfortunate’ the failure of United Progressive Alliance—II to initiate dialogue with all shades of opinion while as he asserted that UPA was “absolutely clueless” on procedure about the initiation of the dialogue.

“The CPI (M) has been consistently advocating the need for a sustained political dialogue with all sections in the State to eventually reach a political settlement. It is unfortunate that the UPA II government has totally failed to pursue this path.”

Karat, who said to have met people from various walks of life for collecting views on “serious situation” prevailing in Kashmir, demanded an ‘open-ended dialogue sans preconditions.

“The talks must be open-ended without any preconditions from either side,” he said.

The CPI-M leader said the state should be treated as a “special case” and advocated for maximum autonomy to address the issue

“The way forward is by recognizing the special status of the state and the need to assure the Kashmiri people of their identity. These require a new political framework in which the bedrock is maximum autonomy.”

The Government, he said, should pursue the Confidence Building Measures with Pakistan “which can widen the canvas of ties and relations across the LOC.”

He said that the government should amend Armed Forces Special Powers Act to remove certain draconian provisions. “Till then, the Disturbed Areas Act should be withdrawn from Srinagar and Certain other civilian areas given the significant decrease in militant activities.”

This, he said, will make the use of the AFSPA redundant in these areas.

“The Prime Minister’s assurance about zero tolerance for human rights violations should be implemented. Action against those guilty in the Pathribal incident and the recent Machil fake encounter case should be taken,” the leader demanded.

The CPI (M) leader said that he was appalled and shocked over the deaths of 62 young boys and girls in the past few weeks due to firing by the central para-military and police forces. “There can be no justification whatsoever for these needless deaths when the protesting youth were only resorting to throwing stones. The families of all those who died have suffered an irreparable loss. We convey our heartfelt sympathy to all the bereaved families.”

Calling for an immediate end to these “brutal and inhuman firings”, he said that there has to be a strict no firing policy to face stone throwing crowds. “Other measures are to be resorted to in such confrontations.”

Referring to injured persons, he said, the state administration should also provide adequate compensation to those wounded in the police actions and rehabilitation measures for those who have permanent disabilities.

He also called for releasing all juveniles who have been detained and lodged in prisons to help restore normalcy. .

“We appeal to people, particularly the youth to pursue their protest through peaceful means,” he said as per a Press Bureau of India correspondent.

He also stressed for an urgent need to generate employment for the youth in Kashmir. “This must be accompanied by the rehabilitation of the thousands of former militants who need jobs and other assistance.”

Referring, to the economic losses suffered due to the continued curfews and strike for the past two months, he demanded government to compensate and revive trade and other economic activities of different sections of the people. “Similarly, the disruption of education of the children due to closure of schools and other institutions should also be addressed.”
