Boy succumbs, 25 injured in fresh Kashmir clashes


Srinagar, August 19: A boy succumbed to wounds while as twenty-five persons including three members of a family were injured in fresh protests in curfew bound Kashmir valley on Thursday.

Milad Ahmad Dar, a minor, son of Mohammad Amin, who sustained spinal cord injuries in a clash with security forces at his native Kulgam district on August 14, died at the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) here this morning. With his death, the toll in clashes between people and policemen has risen to 60 in as amny as seventy days of unrest that began June 11.

Three members of a family were injured this afternoon when security forces opened fire to control demonstrators, demanding withdrawal of a CRPF bunker from the premises of a shrine—Jenab Sahib, Soura in outskirts of Srinagar.

“At around 1200 hrs, a huge stone-pelting mob attacked a bunker of security forces from all the sides to dismantle it forcibly. The security forces had to fire in self defense, resulting into injuries to three persons,” a police spokesman said here.

The injured have been identified as Habib Ullah Tiploo, his daughter—Sameera and daughter-in-law Fatima.

The injured were evacuated to nearby SKIMS. While condition of Tiploo, hit on shoulder and Fatima, who sustained bullet wound on leg, was stated to be stable, Sameera isn battling for life. The 22-year-old was hit in her chest and has been operated upon. The doctors at the tertiary hospital maintain that her condition was very critical.

The incident triggered fresh protests in the area and when reports last came in, it were going unabated. Five policemen and seven more persons were injured in the fresh clashes, sources said.

In Rainawari locality of old city, locals defied curfew and took to streets this morning protesting against the alleged ransacking and damage to the house hold goods by security forces last evening. Three persons sustained injuries in the clashes.

Protests also erupted in Hazratbal in outskirts of here even if locals and the state administrations entered into an agreement following five days stalemate over the shifting of police barracks from the revered shrine. The trouble erupted during cleaning of the grand mosque, housing the holy relics of prophet Mohammad (SAW). As per sources, locals found playing cards beneath a carpet inside the shrine, leading to fresh protest. Police and security forces opened few rounds in air and fired teargas canisters to disperse the protests. Two persons sustained minor injuries.

Earlier, the locals and the district administration were able to break the five-day deadlock and locals had agreed to offer prayers in the shrine.

At-least five persons sustained bullet wounds when sleuths of Rapid Action Force and police opened fire to quell a group of protesters in Seeloo Sopore in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

“A huge mob pelted stones on security forces, on patrolling duty, at Seloo. The security forces lobbed tear smoke shells but the intensity of the stone pelting did not recede. The forces then fired some non-lethal rubber pallets in which five persons were injured,” police said.

The injured were identified as Farooq Ahmed, Tausif Ahmed, Naveed Ahmed, Tariq Ahmad Bhat and Tanveer Ahmed. While Farooq Ahmed was referred to Bone and Joints Hospital, here for specialized treatment, others were discharged from the Sopore hospital after receiving first aid.

Police said curfew remains clamped in Srinagar district, Sopore, Anantnag, Qaimoh and Kulgam while in rest of the Valley restrictions on the movement of people are in force as a precautionary measure.

Shops and business establishments, banks, educational institutions and private offices remained closed and transport off the roads across the Valley.

Meanwhile, Police said that miscreants pelted stones on Karwan-e-Aman buses which were on way to Srinagar from Uri at Sangrama. “Both the buses suffered damages,” police said. A total of 24 persons included 2 first time visitors crossed sides at LoC via Uri.
