Amernath Yatra...Lingam starts melting,

Srinagar, July 21: Due to the rise in temperature, naturally formed ice Shiva lingam at the holy cave shrine of Amarnath in upper reaches of Pahalgam has started melting. However officials so far have not confirmed anything about the melting of Lingam.

The news of melting of lingam has led to utter disappointment among the yatris. Reports’ from the Amarnath cave have indicated that the ice stalagmite inside the Amarnath cave shrine has started melting down fast. Reports said that two other ice lingams, representing Ganesh and Parvati, were intact and have not melted reportedly.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Amarnath Shrine Board, Raj Kumar Goyal refused to comment on the issue. A yatri from Delhi, Manav Sharma who is supposed to have darshan of the lingum this week told Newspoint that he was disappointed after hearing the news about lingum.

“It is a bad news for all devotees and I am eager to see if everything was all right at the cave,” he added. Another pilgrim Taru from Mumbai told this reporter that he was dejected to hear about the melting of lingum.

Environmental experts believe that too many visitors and human activities coupled with global warming have resulted into the melting of the Shiv lingam. An expert said that this melting has resulted due to the increased number of yatris visiting cave.

“Visitors burn camp fires, cook food. All these factors combined with global warming are responsible for melting of Shiv lingum,” the expert viewed. Meanwhile at least 2,65,816 pilgrims have paid obeisance at the Amarnath cave during the last 21 days of nearly two-month long yatra.

A fresh batch of 2,401 pilgrims today left here for their onward journey to 3,888 metre high cave shrine of Amarnath in south Kashmir Himalayas.

The batch comprising 1,514 men, 572 women, 62 children and 253 sadhus left in a cavalcade of 70 vehicles from the base camp at Bhagwati Nagar in jammu around at 0400 hours despite heavy rains lashing wide parts of Jammu province, officials said.

"The Yatra is going on smoothly and quiet peacefully. Over 2.60 lakh pilgrims have had darshan of naturally formed Ice Lingum of Lord Shiva till today," officials said.
