Undeclared curfew, restrictions and rains clamped to foil sit-in demonstrations

Hartal and Undeclared curfew continued in Baramulla while restrictions remained in place in Srinagar and other districts of the Valley for the fourth consecutive day Thursday to thwart the sit-in demonstrations called by Geelani led Hurriyat Conference

Reports from North Kashmir said that like the past three days, CRPF troops and Police were heavily deployed in Baramulla district to quell demonstrations against the recent killings.

Troops and police manned roads, streets, lanes and by lanes of the town . All vital road links and Bridges connecting the volatile old town of Baramulla with rest of the district were cut off by placing barricades of barbed wire.


“There were no reports of protests or clashes in the district. Situation is totally peaceful,” Inspector General of Police (IGP) North Kashmir, Pankaj Saxena said.

In South Kashmir’s Shopian district, hundreds of people, including a large number of women and children took to streets this afternoon after Police carried out series of raids and arrested three youth identified as Mohammad Aslam Lone, Shahnawaz Ahmad Malik and Zahoor Ahmad Malik from Kanipora village.
Chanting slogans and demanding the release of the youth, the protesters tried to march towards Aharbal road. However, CRPF men and Police resorted to cane charge and burst numerous tear smoke shells to break up the demonstration.


In Srinagar, restrictions were put in place to foil Hurriyat Conference (G) called sit-in demonstrations
CRPF troops and Police maintained a tight vigil in the old city of Srinagar to scuttle any move of the people to stage demonstrations. All the roads leading to the old city were sealed However, several areas of the uptown were free of the restrictions.
In Eidgah area of the old city, a vehicle of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) was set ablaze by unidentified youth. The vehicle suffered partial damage in the incident.
In Saida Kadal, police and CRPF troops entered into a verbal brawl this morning.

Station House Officer (SHO) Rainawari, denied the reports of scuffle between police and the CRPF men. He also denied the allegations leveled against the troops.
“There was no such incident in the area,” he added.
Meanwhile Hartal, curfew and restrictions crippled normal life for the eighteenth consecutive day today in Srinagar and other major towns and districts of the Valley. All shops, offices, educational institutes, banks, petrol pumps, business establishments and government offices remained closed throughout the day, while skeletal transport plied on the other wise busy roads and highways of the summer capital.
