People face shortage of essentials in Baramulla, Sopore

Srinagar notices peoples’ vehicles’ mobility

Srinagar, July 12: People are suffering immensely due to the curfew like situation especially in Sopore and Baramulla towns.

However people in the city barring Maisuma and downtown areas here were seen purchasing essential commodities like ration and vegetables today as some shops remained open in few areas.

Patients and attendants are also facing problem due to the non-availability of public transport. People in Baramulla and Sopore are reeling under tremendous shortage of essential commodities including ration, vegetables and other eatables. Curfew like situation in these towns have led to starvation like conditions.

Reports said that shops and other commercial establishments continued to remain closed in tensed Baramulla and Sopore towns.

“Locals are facing great shortage of ration and other eatables as shops are closed. Even people confined indoors are unable to purchase medicines for patients. If the situation remained like this for another few days people may die of starvation,” a Baramulla resident told this newspaper on phone.

Meanwhile very thin private vehicular movement was disrupted in Baramulla and Sopore today when groups of youth took to streets and started pelting stones on moving vehicles.

Reports said that youth gathered at cement bridge Baramulla and closed it for traffic from both the sides. Streets, markets and roads in both the towns wore a deserted look as CRPF and police deployed in strength and wielding automatic weapons and shields guarded the town.

Patients are also suffering immensely due to the non-avalibity of the transport. Reports said that few pregnant women referred from sub district hospital (SDH) Kupwara and district hospital Handwara failed to reach Srinagar on time due to the non-avalibity of the transport.

Similarly those discharged from different Srinagar hospital are also stuck here as public transport is off the roads. “For past two days now we are struggling to find a vehicle to ferry us to Kupwara but have failed to find a single vehicle. Due to the tensed situation in Sopore and Baramullah, public transport is off the roads,” said Husband of Naseema Begum of Lolab Kupwara.

Meanwhile barring Maisuma and downtown areas here Srinagar city witnessed thin traffic movement and some shops also remained open. People were seen purchasing essential commodities like ration and vegetables.
